BIPAI Botswana relies on volunteers to provide supplemental services that increase the health and wellbeing of patients and their caregivers. The volunteer program became official when the volunteer coordinator position was created in 2009.
Volunteers lead a morning playgroup for children ages 6-12 who are waiting for their doctor's appointment. The playgroup meets every morning, Monday through Friday, and averages 20 children attended by 4 volunteers each day.
Expansion plans include adding dental hygiene education, art appreciation, encouragement of reading, continued emphasis on exercise and healthy eating, and development of a tutorial program for patients who need additional educational instruction.
