This 42 page curriculum is intended to assist health professionals in providing ongoing education and support to parents and caregivers of HIV-positive children being treated with ARVs. The curriculum is designed to be used for a two-session adherence literacy course and ongoing clinic-based educational sessions.
Adherence improves markedly if children and their caregivers understand basic essential knowledge regarding the disease they are treating. Recognizing that many caregivers of our pediatric patients are semi-literate or non-literate, we have paid close attention to ensuring that all health messages are clear and direct and that they are reinforced wherever possible by appropriately designed print materials. We have therefore included, as part of this curriculum, visual aids for use during the two adherence education sessions.
This curriculum has been adapted for international use from the Botswana-Baylor Children's Clinical Center of Excellence Adherence Education and Psychosocial Support Guidelines Training Curriculum and Toolkit. The Botswana-Baylor materials were created by staff of the Botswana-Baylor Children's Clinical Center of Excellence in Gaborone, led by volunteer public health specialist Ms. Ellie Feinglass.
The curriculum was created with guidance from learning materials created by the World Health Organization (WHO), Family Health International (FHI), the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), the Implementing AIDS Prevention and Care Project (IMPACT) and Mango Tree Educational Enterprises in Uganda. Visual aids were created by Ms. Feinglass following focus groups with Botswana healthcare providers and parents. Many of the visual concepts for the creation of visual aids were adapted from materials produced by Mango Tree Educational Enterprises [mangotreeuganda.org]
